The Matara Fort, Matara is one of the major tourist attractions in Matara. Local people as well as foreign tourists visit the ancient relic to experience the rich historical tradition of the city. Matara Fort, Matara is also easily accessible from various corners of the city.

The Matara Fort in Matara is one of the major historical structures in the country. It is located at the backdrop of the sea in the outskirts of the city. The Dutch built the fort around 1640. The fort is shaped like a star, which makes it magnificent to look at. The Nilwala River is also located near the fort. The fort is open for visitors from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening.

The Matara Fort was designed like a 5 -pointed star in order to assist sailors in their trip to the sea. In the British era, some changes were made to the structure. The fort had a moat, which has now been restored to its original position. An important part of the fort is the Old Dutch Church. The church was highly decorated with paintings and carvings from Bible.

Matara Fort, Matara also houses a museum, which exhibits a wide variety of historical relics ranging from ancient paintings to frescos and decorated wooden panels. A lot of conservation work has been undertaken to make the fort retain its original position.

Various tours are arranged to the Matara Fort in Matara. The trips start from the main city center and are completed within the evening.
